The Emporia Area Chamber of Commerce is a vibrant nonprofit organization staffed with
dedicated professionals who are passionate about civic leadership and helping our community prosper. Our goal is to ensure that the Emporia area is the first and best choice in which to live, work, and play. Our staff has worked hard on this publication. As we make our way in a post-vaccine era, we’ve done our best to provide helpful, up-to-date, and relevant resources and information. We are proud to be part of a community that continues to rise to challenges with grace and a positive mindset. We see our organization as a central clearinghouse for information and resources dedicated to helping our local businesses thrive. We are actively involved as well with the local civic scene, spearheading long-standing and well-loved traditions like our annual downtown community Christmas parade. The Emporia Area Chamber of Commerce leads the annual Legislative Day in Topeka, facilitating face to face meetings between our members and state government representatives to discuss the issues most important to them. Regular Chamber events like Business After
Hours, Coffee & Conversation, and Group Lunch are designed to foster networking, making relevant and valuable community connections, and building rich relationships. Hand in hand with our members, every day we are building a better community for all who live, work, and play in the Emporia area. The Emporia Area Chamber of Commerce is fortunate to house three vital agencies literally under one roof: the Chamber; our convention and visitors bureau arm, Visit Emporia; and the Regional Development Association for the Emporia/Lyon County area; all right here at the Trusler Business Center. We offer state-of-the-art meeting space for the business community with our ValuNet FIBER Smart Room, which features a gig of fiber enabling high-speed internet and advanced technology.
Thus, businesses and residents can hold virtual interactive meetings using whiteboards, a 70-inch streaming Smart TV, and an ELMO--all of which have proven extremely useful over the past two years of pandemic adaptation. With an uptick in the remote workforce, our scalable facilities have been a real boon to our members and the wider community. Stop by the Emporia Area Chamber of Commerce, conveniently located at 719 Commercial Street in downtown Emporia, to see a friendly face, inquire about our services, experience the smart technology we use, and find other helpful information and resources. Here, you can do all this and more. The beauty of the Emporia community is due, at least in part, to the kindness and generosity of its residents. This is a community that cares; a community that supports dozens of charitable and nonprofit organizations. In fact, Emporia is home to more than 200 programs that feed, house, heal, educate, counsel, shelter, inspire, enlighten, and nurture people of every age, gender, race, and socioeconomic status. These organizations help strengthen the fabric of our community by enriching and enhancing our citizens’ quality of life. Generous donors and volunteers alike find a wide range of organizations from which to choose to give of their time, talent, and treasure. In Emporia, you will find churches and daycare centers, senior services and nutrition programs, emergency and victim assistance programs, museums and theaters, soup kitchens, health care, homeless and housing programs, youth programs, and much more. Most of Emporia’s nonprofits began as grassroots agencies seeded and grown locally, such as Camp Alexander, which empowers children by providing a safe place for growth and enrichment in the great outdoors, and Hispanics of Today and Tomorrow, that works to preserve the Hispanic heritage and strengthen communication and understanding among diverse cultures. Emporia is also home to national and state-affiliated organizations, such as The Salvation Army, American Red Cross, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts , and more. For Emporia, there is beauty and power behind residents’ collective desire to improve the lives of others. That power has helped to build a more beautiful, strong and thriving community.

From award-winning early childhood learning centers to adult learning opportunities and multilingual outreach, and from post-high school technical college to the highest-ranked four-year college and public education institutions in the state, our commitment to educational excellence shows.
FLINT HILLS TECHNICAL COLLEGE Founded in 1963, FHTC continually adapts to meet the needs of today’s workforce. Accredited by the Higher Learning Commission, FHTC offers distinctive and innovative programs in the areas of health, arts, information technology and industry technology as well as short-term certificates and general education courses.
EMPORIA STATE UNIVERSITY Changing lives since 1863. ESU offers 200+ undergraduate and graduate academic programs within its four colleges: College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, School of Business, School of Library & Information Management and The Teachers College. For five consecutive years, ESU has earned designation as a College of Distinction for innovative application of high-impact learning experiences at the undergraduate level. Emporia State remains the first and only public university in Kansas to earn this recognition. Since 2015-16, ESU students have shown the lowest average student debt of all universities in the Kansas Board of Regents system based on data from the Institute for College Access & Success. With flat-rate tuition, ESU is an unbelievable value.
USD 253 Emporia Public Schools serve students from preschool through high school, including adult students seeking high school diplomas later in life. The district has a brand new early childhood center for 3 and 4-year-olds, six neighborhood elementary schools, one middle school for grades 6-8, one high school for grades 9-12, and the Flint Hills Learning Center (FHLC) located at the Flinthills Mall for adult learners. Additionally, the FHLC offers classes for adult learners at two of our local employers. All K-12 students are provided with a Chromebook to use at school. Secondary students can take their Chromebooks home to complete assignments. In November of 2019, the district received a vote of confidence from USD 253 community stakeholders when they voted to support a $78 million bond to update district facilities. The bond is providing upgrades in all nine school buildings including safety and security improvements, new classrooms and student support spaces, updates to building systems, and a brand new state-of-the-art early learning center. Construction has recently been completed at Walnut Elementary and the Jones Early Childhood Development Center. Currently, construction is underway at Logan Avenue Elementary and Emporia High School with Emporia Middle School soon to follow. All construction projects are scheduled to be completed by Spring of 2024. Emporia Public Schools has nearly 4,300 students and attracts the state’s best teachers, administrators, and support staff who embrace the Kansans CAN vision for our state. That vision is built on a foundation of strong early education and a goal of providing high school graduates with the knowledge and skills needed for success in post-secondary education and careers. At the secondary level, Emporia High School offers advanced placement courses, opportunities for dual credit college enrollment, and course sequences for 15 career pathways. The district is known for the award-winning faculty with a tradition of Kansas Master Teachers, Kansas Teacher of the Year Finalists, Kansas Horizon Award winners, Kansas Superintendents of the Year, Kansas Assistant Principals of the Year, and Kansas Secondary Principals of the Year. n With 700+ employees, ESU is the third-largest employer in Emporia . n In the last five years, ESU and ESU Foundation have awarded millions of dollars in scholarships to students. n Over the past four years, an average of 96% of graduates found jobs in their field or went on to advanced degrees after graduation. n Jones Foundation Grants (need-based) and annual $1,000 Tuition Vouchers are available for students coming to ESU from Coffey, Lyon and Osage counties in Kansas. n Thanks to ESU friends and alumni who are medical professionals, ESU awards two $10,000 Premedical Fellowships to incoming freshmen who graduated from Kansas high schools and intend to follow the premedical track for preparation for medical school. n In November 2021, the Aspen Institute named FHTC one of the 150 institutions eligible to compete for the $1 million Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence, the nation’s signature recognition of high achievement and performance among America’s community colleges. n FHTC was ranked #1 in the nation on The Chronicle of Higher Education’s 2-Year Colleges With the Best 3-Year Graduation Rates for Public Institutions, 2019 list released in August 2021. n FHTC’s Practical Nursing program has seen two consecutive years (2019 and 2020) of NCLEX pass rates above the national average for graduates with the Spring 2021 cohort receiving a 100% pass rate. In third-quarter 2021, NCLEX pass rates for first-time test takers increased from 93.75% to 94.12%. n Utilizing the Excellence in Career Technical Education initiative, FHTC partners with area Kansas high schools to allow students to earn college credits while still in high school.
USD 252 Southern Lyon County USD 252 serves schools located in Hartford, Neosho Rapids, and Olpe. The district recently passed a $14 million Bond for District-Wide Facilities Improvements and Additions in all three communities. As part of USD 252 civic engagement, the Honor Flight Program continues to be very successful, honoring our Veterans for their service to our nation. Student guardians fundraise and accompany veterans to Washington DC to visit their respected memorials each school year. Early Childhood Centers are established in Olpe and Neosho Rapids offering preschool and daycare for children 6-weeks to five years of age. Afterschool programming offers enrichment and daycare options to families during the school year. Olpe and Hartford High Schools each have a greenhouse with an automated heating system as well as an irrigation system for year-round hands on activities for students. STEM classrooms/labs are utilized during the school year and summer programming. One to One technology for all students PK12 is provided to support classroom instruction and learning opportunities. Drone technology programs were implemented within our Agriculture and STEM departments at USD #252. Southern Lyon County School District also offers summer literacy, after school, drivers’ education, hunters safety course, and aviation programs. PUBLIC HEALTH CONNECTS US ALL
Public Health is the science of protecting and improving the health of the people in our community. Lyon County Public Health promotes healthy lifestyles, creating healthy environments, and preventing and responding to infectious diseases.

Public health professionals focus on Community Health by implementing educational programs, recommending policies, and administering services promoting healthcare equity, quality, and accessibility. Community health work affects peoples’ lives every day, usually without them noticing. Over the last two years, however, Lyon County Public Health has been Emporia’s lead agency in responding to the coronavirus pandemic, administering testing, contact tracing and disease investigation. Lyon County Public Health is now the leading driver in the effort to vaccinate the community against COVID-19. Environmental Health is the branch of public health that concerns all aspect of the natural and built environment that can affect the health of people. Environmental health educates residents about the Lyon County sanitation code, and implements it as needed. This includes evaluating and permitting of private sewage treatment systems, water screening, school inspections, and investigating environmental health hazards. Emergency Preparedness works to protect the health of Lyon County residents through efforts to prevent, prepare for, respond to, and recover from public health disasters. This means working alongside state and local emergency management services, along with emergency responders to prepare for, and recover from emergencies, such as floods, tornados, fires, and severe weather.

BUSINESS IS ALWAYS GOOD Strategically located at the nexus of I-35 and I-335 and U.S. Highway 50, Emporia is a regional manufacturing, educational, transportation, medical, and agricultural center. Its centralized location and economic diversity make it a wonderful place to create, grow, and locate your business. With this growth are job opportunities. 2021 continued to be a strong year for businesses in the Emporia region. Many of our top employers continued to grow and expand job opportunities and wages as demand for their products continued to grow worldwide. With a low and stable unemployment rate and a labor participation rate higher than the statewide average, Emporia is full of great job opportunities in a variety of areas. Emporia is located in the heart of Flint Hills ranching and farming operations, which fosters a powerful work ethic. Some of those work ethic attributes are the understanding of what it takes to get the job done, showing up to work on time, being ready to work, and strong leadership skills, as well as the abilities to work as a team, to problem solve, and to pay attention to detail. 2021 saw continued investment by local manufacturers, as Michelin (formerly CAMSO) continued to invest in the Emporia community with an expansion project on their facility in Industrial Park III. With a total investment of more than $2 million on their project, Michelin continues to expand their workforce needs, adding 30 additional jobs in Emporia. In October of 2021, Fanestil Meats broke ground on the second phase of their relocation and expansion project on West Highway 50. The relocation of their production facility will allow Fanestil Meats to move out of the floodway area on South Highway 99 to a modern and more efficient production facility that allows for expanded capacity and growth in the future. With the tremendous amount of increased capacity at our businesses and job growth over the past years, Emporia is facing growth challenges in both a tight labor market and single-family housing availability. The community is stepping forward to face these challenges head-on, with investment in the Ignite Emporia initiative under the Emporia Area Chamber of Commerce. Focusing on issues that limit growth in our community and workforce, Ignite Emporia is helping to coordinate local efforts in single-family housing development, workforce development, and efforts to better understand how childcare access impacts our local workforce. Emporia is one of the few communities in the region with multiple choices for higher education: Flint Hills Technical College (FHTC) and Emporia State University (ESU). Collaboration with both organizations to develop our regional talent pipeline is critical for future business success. FHTC and ESU assist both individuals and businesses in mitigating skill deficiencies and educational gaps. The future for the Emporia regional economy is excellent. With the diversity of business enterprises in the area, when some sectors are experiencing the hardship of headwinds, other sectors benefit from strong tailwinds. We anticipate continued and consistent growth for the region. Grab some discs and enjoy an afternoon at one of our six professional disc golf courses. If you prefer to adventure with your taste buds, our unique and inspiring cuisine has you covered. Five words you won’t hear in Emporia; “There is nothing to do!” Emporia may be a small community, but the activities and events we have will compete with any city. Emporia provides an eclectic mix of activities for every lifestyle. Hop on your bike, eat some fantastic food, shop till you drop! Emporia has many outdoor activities, stores, restaurants, music venues, and nightlife options. New adventures and traditions are waiting for you! FROM BICYCLING TO DISC GOLF Like to bicycle? Try the Unbound! Named one of the top endurance races in the world by Velo Magazine, more than 2,000 cyclists from across the world descend on Emporia for this event. The Unbound is a grueling, 200 mile bike race through the Flint Hills! Also known as gravel grinding, bike riders endure blistering sun, steep hills and rough trails. Only the toughest will finish. Watch the rider take off, follow along at the checkpoints and don’t miss the huge finish line party in downtown Emporia. Are you more of a casual bike rider? Beginning in the spring, beginner rides take place every Wednesday evening through the end of October. To learn more about the various group rides, visit our two great bike shops: Gravel City Adventure and Eclectic Bikes. Five bike repair stations are installed around the community; three on the campus of Emporia State University, one in the parking lot on Eighth between Commercial and Merchant, and one at All Veteran’s Memorial Park. It’s no wonder that Emporia is often called the Bicycling Capital of Kansas!

If bicycling is not your style, how about a round of disc golf? Emporia is home to six professional 18-hole disc golf courses; four in the city and two more champion-level courses within 20 minutes. The Dynamic Discs Open is a PDGA National Tour event, with 1,600 disc golfers competing on our local courses. Emporia is proud to host PDGA Junior World Championships and other prestigious events. You don’t have to be a professional disc golfer to enjoy our numerous courses. Dynamic Discs actively encourages new golfers and is always there to help anyone at any level. The David Traylor Zoo is Emporia’s “Oasis.” It is an oasis providing visitors a special place to escape the ordinary and surround themselves in the magic of unique animals and their unique habitats.

Whether a casual visit and stroll through the Zoo or participation in one of the many educational programs or social events, the Zoo leaves a visitor with a sense of satisfaction and appreciation for the natural world and the conservation and stewardship required to maintain it. The Zoo is anchored by two highly prized venues. The All Veteran’s Memorial and Soden’s Grove Park (ball park, Sertoma Club train and picnic areas) combined with the Zoo to create an exceptional destination for residents and visitors to our community.
IT TAKES A WHOLE COMMUNITY!
A longtime vision is becoming a reality as the Zoo completed its first multi-million dollar campaign raising $4.8 million for new construction and renovations to many older exhibits. This campaign is a fantastic example of the giving nature of the Emporia community! It truly takes a whole community to raise a Zoo and Emporia did not disappoint! In 2021, the Zoo Entrance, Memorial, North American Flyway and Laughing Kookaburra exhibits were opened to the public. In 2022, the Zoo Education Center will be completely renovated and transformed expanding our classroom space from 1 indoor classroom to 2 with an additional outdoor classroom. This space will be crucial in training the next generation. Visitors can also expect to see renovations continuing throughout the Zoo to modernize many of the older exhibits, giving the animals opportunities to explore and use their natural instincts. The North American River Otter habitat will be coming soon. We hope you will hurry back to visit us again-
