Recreation and Sports

Fifteen sports and recreation facilities offer an array of competitive and leisure opportunities, with outdoor events from track & field, hiking trails and golf to swimming, bird watching and fishing. Indoor facilities offer swimming, roller skating, volleyball, basketball and racquetball, just to name a few.

Dreams are made and realized in the White Auditorium with high school and college tournaments or championships held each year. As home court to Emporia State University basketball and volleyball games, the walls of the auditorium abound with the cheers of dedicated sports fans. The arena was named for William Allen White’s son, William Lindsay White, who was an accomplished journalist and novelist and editor of The Emporia Gazette.

The David Traylor Zoo of Emporia is one of our favorite attractions. Take time to walk or drive through the zoo to see the bald eagles, numerous animals and amphibians, and lush landscaping surrounding a duck pond with gorgeous array of flowers blooming

The Emporia Municipal Golf Course is an 18-hole course that boasts some of the best greens in Kansas. Sitting on a hill overlooking the city, the Emporia Country Club features a golf course, restaurant, tennis courts and pool.

Disc golf is fast becoming a popular sport with three fields throughout Emporia. Soccer, baseball and softball are community favorites with championships drawing visitors nine months of the year.

The TRYSA Soccer Complex, Trusler Softball and Baseball Complex, and Welch football, track and field stadium at Emporia State University, are huge attractions for sports fans.

The Jones Aquatic Center is a must for the summer featuring an Olympic-sized lap pool, lazy river and slides.

Public lakes are within driving distance of Emporia. The distance to the nearest public access lake is only 14 miles. Activities range from swimming and fishing to water skiing and motor boating.
